I study the worldwide market for thoroughbred racing and breeding.
A life-long horse person, Emily has been watching, riding, or thinking about horses nearly every day of her life. Native of Louisville Kentucky, she got hooked on racing at her home track of Churchill Downs. Her first statistics class came in a high school classroom just three miles from the historic track, when her racing-fan teacher introduced her to the math behind racing and wagering.
She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in Marketing, along with a B.S. in Business from Indiana University, and an MBA from Xavier University. Exercising her statistical skills and passion for all things equine, her study of the Thoroughbred industry began in earnest when writing her doctoral dissertation on the 2008 Keeneland September Yearling Auction, and has continued ever since. Emily is an Associate Professor at the University of Montana College of Business and teaches courses in marketing and business operations.
Her professional experience includes collegiate internships at dot-com startup Ironmax.com and Fortune 500 company, Yum! Brands. Before her academic career, Emily worked in Private Banking at Fifth Third Bank in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Emily has published in various academic journals on topics related to racing and breeding. She produces the Stallion Spectator Ratings, Thoroughbred Market Report, and APEX Sire Statistics with her collaborator Bill Oppenheim, as they seek to answer the eternal question of “just how good is this thoroughbred stallion, really?”.
She currently resides in Missoula, Montana, but travels to major thoroughbred auctions around the world. Find out how to contact me.
